Motion Prompts That Actually Work: An Image-to-Video Cheat Sheet

The three-part motion prompt
Every reliable motion prompt answers three questions: What does the camera do? What does the subject do? What does the atmosphere do? One clause each, comma-separated:
slow dolly-in, subject blinks and smiles softly, dust particles drift in warm light
Camera vocabulary
- dolly-in / dolly-out — push toward or pull away from the subject
- orbit left/right — circle around the subject
- pan — rotate horizontally from a fixed position
- tilt up/down — vertical rotation, great for reveals
- handheld drift — subtle organic shake, documentary feel
- crane up — rise above the scene
Combine with speed words: slow, gentle, gradual produce smoother results than fast, rapid (which tend to smear).
Subject actions that stay stable
Small, natural movements preserve identity best: blinking, breathing, subtle smiles, hair movement, head turns up to ~30°, fabric sway. Full-body actions (walking, dancing) work better with video models specialized for motion — pick Wan 2.7 for those.
Atmosphere layers
Wind in hair, drifting steam or smoke, rain streaks, light shifting warmer, particles in light beams, background bokeh movement. One atmosphere clause adds life; three make chaos.

slow orbit right, subject holds pose, golden hour flare sweeps across frame

Fixing common failures
- Warping face → reduce motion intensity, use "subtle, gentle"; keep the face larger in frame.
- Frozen video → your prompt only described the scene; add explicit camera + subject verbs.
- Flicker → avoid contradictory clauses ("static camera, fast orbit") and strobe-like lighting words.
